Title: Grave Peril
Author: Jim Butcher
Genre: Urban fantasy
Verdict: I'm sold.
There will be two dozen books in the Dresden Files by the time Jim Butcher's done. He's halfway there, so I'm catching up now. At least it's not like the Wheel of Time series, where I have to read a dozen of them and they're all over three hundred thousand words.
Anyway, the first book, Storm Front, established Harry Dresden as a wizard-for-hire in modern-day Chicago, and not a lot of people take him seriously. He's put to the test up against a powerful novice sorcerer and has to destroy the guy before he wrecks half the city.
In the second book, Fool Moon, Harry is up against werewolves, loup-garoux, lycanthropes and hexenwulves for a host of different reasons. Also very enjoyable.
In this third book, we're getting a taste of the overall story arc for Harry. We see some of his past reckless deeds come back to haunt him, and we're introduced to new, powerful characters who will help him later on. Harry's up against the ghost of a demon that he and his friend Michael slaughtered a few months ago, and they'll have to go through hell and back in order to quell the uprising.
Butcher's writing is fast-paced, so it doesn't take forever to read the book. It's also got humor sprinkled throughout, and he doesn't go easy on Harry--not by a long shot. Things just get worse and worse for him. I'm interested to see how the rest of the series plays out.
Readers keep in mind though, there's a heavier amount of language in this book compared to the last two, and frequent sex-talk. Just a heads-up.
